Founded in 1833, Batavia has the distinguished pleasure of being the oldest city in Kane County, Illinois. During the industrial revolution, Batavia was known as the largest producer of windmills. Located in the Fox River Valley, about 45 miles west of Chicago, Batavia has become a very desirable location for people who are interested in settling down because of the scenic area and direct access to Chicago. Batavia has approximately 24,914 residents, and continues to grow.

The Batavia Park District was established in 1969 and offers residents over 350 acres of recreational space at over 39 park sites. Included in the recreational area is an in-line skating and skateboarding park, an aquatic facility, numerous baseball and soccer fields as well as tennis and basketball courts, and a museum. The Park District offers 1,045 programs each year and serves nearly 94,800 participants through various recreational, arts, and environmental programs. Batavia's Riverwalk was named one of the Midwest region's "Top 10" by the Chicago Tribune.

The area is served by Batavia School District 101, which includes Batavia High School, Rotolo Middle School, Alice Gustafson School and Grace McWayne School.
