Utilities tycoon Samuel Insull purchased 2200 acres of farmland and planned for this new suburb to be a model English town. Westchester was incorporated in 1926. Real estate developers were instrumental in seeing to the construction of streets, sidewalks, sewers and streetlamps in addition to the laying of water mains and planting of parkway trees.

Construction began but was delayed by the Great Depression. After World War II population almost tripled and new construction had a large gain. Georgians, ranches and split-levels joined the few English-style homes built before the Depression.

Westchester is also the home of the Wolf Road Prairie which is an Illinois State Nature Preserve saved from development by the Save the Prairie Foundation.

Transportation
The Eisenhower Expressway is Westchester’s northern boundary and the Tri-State Tollway (294) is its western boundary. It is very accessible to public transportation as well. It is an easy trip both to downtown Chicago and O’Hare Airport.

Schools
The elementary schools in Westchester feed into Proviso West High School. There are also several parochial schools. Westchester boasts a community center and fitness and aquatic centers as well.

Hospitals
Gottlieb Memorial Hospital is located in Westchester and Loyola Hospital is located nearby.
