Founded in 1873 with the arrival of the Burlington Northern Railroad, historic Hinsdale has long been one of the Western Suburb’s most prestigious communities. Gently rolling lawns and quiet streets bordered by oak, maple and elm trees create the setting for the area’s stately executive homes. Downtown Hinsdale is reminiscent of a bygone era, with its charming old-fashioned boutiques and antique shops, fine dining establishments and a recently renovated Historical Society. Self-contained municipal and recreational facilities provide a high standard of services.

Transportation
Resident commuters have a 22-minute ride to the Chicago Loop via RTA Metra trains from the main Hinsdale station. Drivers enjoy proximity to most major arteries via the Tri-State Tollway, which runs along Hinsdale’s eastern border.

Schools
Hinsdale schools are highly acclaimed for their academic and athletic excellence. Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South High Schools serve area residents and are both noted for high average ACT scores. Hinsdale Central’s foreign language program has attracted the attention of the U.S. Department of Education as prospective national model program. A middle school and five public elementary schools serve the village in addition to several parochial and private institutions. St. Isaac Jogues elementary school has been nationally recognized for excellence.

Shopping
In addition to several local plazas and the central business district of charming shops and small businesses, Hinsdale residents are conveniently close to major regional malls. Oak Brook Center, about 3 miles north of town, is home to such prestigious retail giants as Nordstrom, Marshall Field’s, Neiman Marcus and Sears.

Recreation
The village is home to 18 parks on over 120 acres, including 14 tennis courts, a swimming pool and five playgrounds. Cross-country skiing, swimming, archery and horseback riding are among District-sponsored events. Also in the vicinity are six golf and country clubs, a Community House that coordinates a variety of fine arts programs for all age groups, and the Old Graue Mill Museum with its many nostalgic reminders of the Hinsdale’s distinguished past. The village also houses a Cultural Arts Center and a state-of-the-art library.

Hospitals
Hinsdale Hospital is a 459-bed facility employing over 500 physicians. Specialties include a cancer center, cardiac care unit, and comprehensive rehabilitation. Residents are also served by a number of smaller, more specialized medical facilities.
